We Carry On

LaVonna Cady's COVID Memory

We recently received this #COVIDMemory in the mail from LaVonne Cady. Her memory was handwritten on yellow legal paper which you’ll find on the left. Below is a transcript.

“We Carry On”

Having no mask to keep away virus & no way to make one, I thought of the shield my husband wore in his woodshop.

I went to the basement& there above his table saw was the shield hanging on the ceiling.

I put it on. Loose. Needed to be taken in. Need a little Windex! There!

Covers my whole head & covers my shaggy hair. OFF I go! –to bank, pharmacy, groceries, & home.

Reactions to my mask-of sorts “That’s different. Where did you get it?”

A few smiled or laughed at me.  “I like that! Where could I get one?”

Looking back to mid & late 1930s’ Quarantines in Blackhawk County, Iowa, County Health Dept posted signs on front doors to stay away from: “Measles”-red color – “mumps” –orange, “Chicken Pox” –yellow, signs in various colors.

Now there are vaccinations, eliminating these diseases.

Covid-19 time reminds me that I can’t see my loved ones:

My daughter, Sarah, & family in California, my granddaughter, Hannah, in Louisville, Kentucky.

My younger brother, Johnny, in Minneapolis calls every day for my husband, Darrel, died 11-2-19, John, my brother, just wants to see how I’m doing.  I talk to his wife & daughter’s family.

I’m pretty sure that Darrel, married to me for 64 years, looks down on me & chuckles at my wearing his shield.
