Volunteer Team

With the help of our volunteer team, the east side of the museum building is continuing to be improved! This past month a team of students, local organizations and museum volunteers worked to remove outdated and no longer functioning heating and light fixtures from the wooden bow trusses.

The 201 S. Lafayette Street building was a long-time automobile garage before being occupied by the Western Illinois Museum.  With plans being developed to fully utilize the east part of the garage-like building, museum staff and volunteers are working to better assess what can be used in the future and things that should be removed to make way for the next steps!

The project was managed under the guidance of museum volunteers Greg VanVleet and Marty Belz. They reached out to the Macomb Centennial Morning Rotary Club and the Construction Management Association, a WIU Student organization,  who were needed to remove the somewhat large and cumbersome fixtures.  Using two scissor lifts provided by Commercial Rental of Macomb, the scope of the project was able to be completed in three sessions. The students gained experience under the direction of WIU Engineering Technology Professor and advisor, Brian Stone while working side by side with community members.

The museum was able to sell the metal parts for scrap earning $155 which will be used towards replacing the back door. Thanks to the many willing volunteers who helped us create a community-centered museum and preserve an architecturally significant building.
