Lucy Pettengill, Station Operator on the Underground Railroad
March 23 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

On Sunday, March 23, at 1:30 PM, the Western Illinois Museum will present reenactor Laura Keyes in a living history portrayal of Lucy Pettengill, a station operator on the Underground Railroad. This engaging performance brings to life both the dangers and rewards that conductors and station operators faced while helping freedom seekers. Through storytelling and immersive historical interpretation, the program offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past in a meaningful way.
Doors will open at 1:00 PM, and there is a suggested $5 donation at the door. Refreshments will be served.
Learn about the struggles Lucy Pettengill and her fellow abolitionists encountered in 1857 as they assisted freedom seekers passing through the Peoria, Illinois, area on their journey north. Mrs. Pettengill will also share details of abolitionist movements and actions in Western Illinois, explaining why her work was both secret and essential.
This program launches a new series designed to connect key moments in Black history. Upcoming programs in the Throughline in Black History series will feature films, food, and conversation. The public is invited to Sunday afternoon screenings at 2:30 PM of three films: Origin (2023) on April 13, Two Trains Runnin’ (2016) on May 11, and Freedom Riders (2020) on July 20.
This program is funded in part by the Two Rivers Arts Council.
