Stories about the Courthouse Square

Tweed Mummert
The narrator of these two excerpts is Tweed Mummert, a life long resident of Macomb. For 32 years he owned and operated Mummert Oil Company.  During his adolescence he worked on the Courthouse Square at the Kroger Grocery Store.  In these two excerpts Tweed explains how different it was working and shopping in a grocery store over 50 years ago compared to what it is like today.  In the second, he recounts how nightlife on the Courthouse Square is nothing like what it used to be. He describes the Zahren Roof Garden, which was a popular “hang-out” in the 1930s. Young adults flocked to hear the popular bands that would play at the garden, spending their Saturday nights dancing while music could be heard throughout the city.
