Our founders and history
The esteemed and fiery House of GlitterCorps courageously brings forth it’s humble beginnings in Washington, DC, under the guidance of General Alexander Macomb.
General Macomb and Commodore Thomas McDonough fought together in the Battle of Plattsburg during the War of 1812. Macomb leads the land battle and McDonough the fleet on Lake Champlain. They were both well respected by the troops they guided. It’s from this experience that they wrote the guiding ideas of house Glittercorps house was formed. At the Macomb School of Magic, the house expanded from the insights of these two War of 1812 heroes.

Challenge 1
General Macomb enrolled in the New York military at the age of 16 and made military service a life-long career. Can you name the seven branches of our military today? Which is the newest? Bonus points for sharing the name of someone you know who is or has served with your friends.
Answer: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and the Space Force.
Challenge 2
General Macomb attended West Point Academy in the first class of the Army Corp of Engineers. They are the part of the Military that help design and build bridges, roads, dams, and other structures for our communities. Can you name a lock and dam that is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers in our region? Bonus points for the name of the river it regulates.
Answer: Lock and Dam in Hamilton, Illinois and Keokuk, Iowa; The Missississippi River. Construction began in 1910 and was opened in 1913.
Challenge 3
Commodore McDonnough also began his military service at the age of 16. He joined the Navy and was commissioned as a midshipman aboard the 24-gun USS Gangers. What do you call a team or group of sailing ships under the command of a Commodore?
Answer: Fleet
Challenge 4
Did the sailing vessels that Commadore McDonnough use in the War of 1812 have motors?
Answer: No; they had to use the wind to move and sometime oars to row. Current in lakes also had to be considered in navigating the vessels.
Challenge 5
True or False: Soldiers who served for five years in the War of 1812 received 160 acres of land in designated states in the United States. Some of that land was located in McDonough County. Bonus points if you can tell us the name for those designated areas.
