Letter from our Executive Director, Sue Scott

Surrounded by the sound of hammering and clouds of dust, I want to share a few insights as we move to the close of the capital improvement project we launched in 2021. With a few unexpected turns, incredible generosity, and outcomes that once felt like a dream, we now have a fully functional, reimagined building—thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteers, Advisory Council and Board members, and staff. It has become a place to learn, experience, and connect.
And here we are—with a beautifully renovated building, a distinct space for gathering, and an improved environment to preserve our history. This 1926 structure has stood strong, even as we worked to repurpose its old garage. Every decision was made with care to preserve its design and honor its original purpose as a Ford dealership and garage. The building itself is an important part of our local history. Thanks to Jerry Vawter’s expert masonry, it has now been fully tuckpointed, with damaged bricks, sills, and lintels replaced. It’s ready to stand strong for another hundred years.
Guided by thoughtful input from architects, contractors, and community members alike, we crafted a plan that reflects and supports our vision: to create a space that invites people to challenge perspectives, be energized by new ideas, and together cultivate understanding to look at the world differently. The transformation is striking. The new floor plan enhances everything we do—our exhibits, programs, and collections—and shows what’s possible when people come together with a shared purpose.
Over the last three years, this renovation has taken substantial time, energy, and funding—and it was worth it. Our public programs have more than doubled, growing from 34 to over 70 in the past two years. As a community-focused organization, this expansion reflects our commitment to offering diverse, humanities-focused experiences. Whether it’s 20 people gathered in meaningful conversation or 150 enjoying a premiere musical performance with a cool beverage in hand, every event is different. Each one brings people together, often in unexpected ways. That’s success—and that’s priceless.
To mark this achievement, we’re celebrating all month long. In June, you can experience a new sound and art installation, be challenged by a Juneteenth Community Conversation, enjoy a performance by a singer-songwriter, or connect at our Ice Cream Social. You can look at the world differently through the eyes of a local photographer, attend a lecture on Abraham Lincoln or Women Artists in Illinois, or browse our open-shelving collection for a deeper understanding of local history.
This is the impact of your support. And this is how we celebrate—by creating meaningful learning experiences that connect us and honor our shared history.
