Audio Connections: An Introduction to Podcasting Workshop

April 21 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A new partnership between Cuba High School’s Forgottonia Project, Tri States Public Radio, the Western Illinois Museum, and the WIU Department of Broadcasting and Journalism is bringing together a group of content creators to share techniques for collecting and sharing the stories of west central Illinois. A three-hour workshop will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Western Illinois Museum. Members from each organization will offer short sessions that draw on their broad base of storytelling experience.

The workshop is designed for those new to making audio recordings and those with some experience. It will introduce four key areas in creating podcasts and learn practical tools to create compelling audio content. During the workshop, the four 30-minute sessions will cover the following areas:

  • storyline, planning, and research;
  • equipment and field recording;
  • source materials and interviews;
  • putting recordings together, editing, and timing.

The workshop sessions will be led by broadcast and content producer professionals including educators and students from Cuba High School and WIU, and Tri States Public Radio and Museum staff who each have experience recording audio for podcasts, radio, and oral histories.

The workshop is ideal for those ages 13 and up who are interested in starting a podcast and learning about interview techniques and audio equipment.  Space is limited and advanced registration is recommended.  To reserve a seat for the workshop visit the online registration page. Registration is also available by contacting the Museum at 309-837-2750 or info@wimuseum.org

The workshop will be offered at no cost to the participants. Refreshments will be served.

Additional program funding is partly provided by grants from Illinois Humanities and the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

The Western Illinois Museum is located at 201 S Lafayette Street, one block south of Macomb’s Courthouse Square. For more information, contact the Museum by phone at 309-837-2750, text at 309-837-2613, or email info@wimuseum.org.

The building is fully accessible. There is free public parking and it is a short distance from the Purple Weekend Line of the Go West Bus System.

About the Forgottonia Project

The Forgottonia Project was created by educator Joe Brewer and his students at Cuba High School which is located in rural west central Illinois.  Initiated as a public history project to align with recent statewide efforts to establish more inclusive and inquiry-based social studies classrooms, it recognizes that rural youth are among the largest demographic leaving the state. The project focuses on the forgotten story to connect students to the unique history and culture of the region.  High school students are provided an opportunity to follow their curiosity about local history and explore contemporary issues facing their community. To learn more visit forgottoniaproject.com or search for The Forgottonia Project wherever you find podcasts.
