Attraction! Live Pigs at The Blind Swine

September 7: ATTRACTION! LIVE PIGS
The Western Illinois Museum announces a special attraction will be included at the next opening of The Blind Swine Speakeasy. The public is invited on Friday, September 7th from 4:30 to 7:30 pm to see locally raised live pigs at what can be described as a cross between an event and exhibit. In the 1920s rural speakeasies were often called The Blind Pig. Readily available, live pigs were used as an attraction to provide a cover for the illegal serving of liquor. At The Blind Swine, the museum strives to be historically accurate and has invited local hog producers Ann and Kendall Knowles of Hickory Grove Farm to show off some of their pigs.
Enter the speakeasy through the museum’s “back door” located on the south side of the building, if you have the password. There is a suggested $5 donation at the door, or as they would say in 1920, hit me with an “Abe’s Cabe.” Hy-Vee catering will provide the spirits –for a price.
Music will be provided by a Canton, Illinois, based band, Nathan Taylor Trio, who will play two sets starting at 5:00 pm. Guitarist and vocalist Nathan Taylor will be joined by Larry Harms on clarinet and saxophone, and Tom Stoner on trumpet.
The Blind Swine Speakeasy will be open on the first and third Fridays of the month through September. More details about upcoming music and activities taking place at the speakeasy will be announced, along with the password, on the museum’s Facebook page, Twitter feed and website.
