Contra Dance
May 9, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Western Illinois Museum will hold a Contra Dance on Saturday, May 9, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The dance will feature caller Jamie Lane and fiddler John Lane, for an evening of old-time fun. Bring a partner, or come and meet new friends. There is a suggested $5 donation at the door.
Contra Dances have their origins in 17th century English country line dances. This style of dance was adapted by the French before being refashioned in the United States in the 18th century, becoming part of American folk dances. The social nature of the dances is unique in its ability to cross class lines.
Contra dances welcome all ages regardless of experience. A caller walks the group through each dance, demonstrating the steps and formations. During a dance the participants dance with not just their partners but everyone else in the group, making contra dancing an enjoyable group activity.
The Western Illinois Museum is located at 201 South Lafayette Street, two blocks south of Macomb’s historic Courthouse Square. For more information, contact the museum at 309.837.2750 or info@westernillinoismuseum.org.
